Encountering God in nature

“When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? You made him (her) a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor” Psalm 8:3-5.

So now we are into June – the days are long and the sun is warming us up after a lot of rain! Summer is a time to get outdoors – either in our own town or to travel and see the sights. It’s time for fresh encounters with the Lord of a ‘natural’ type.
Carol and I just finished hosting a couple from Toronto for five days. We took them all over, including mini golf at Cultus and walking the Vedder on a sun washed afternoon. They commented repeatedly on the beauty of this place, and I saw Chilliwack through fresh eyes. We live in a spectacularly beautiful corner of the planet!
With summer here, we’re heading back to our favorite lake, where I snapped the photo above. All around is evidence of the handiwork of God – trees, flowers, water. But also, to go outside on a clear moonlit night and observe the enormity of the heavens. For a Christian, it is a fresh encounter with God!
What I love about David’s teaching in Psalm 8 is that we don’t find insignificance as we look at the created order – we find wonderful significance! To know that He who made the worlds by the sound of His voice also knows and cares for me personally! Somehow, He knows the number of hairs on my head – He knows all about me – and He wants me to be in heaven with Him forever! What a transcendent truth! What an encounter with our loving Father!
So, as you are outside this summer, let me invite you to seek a fresh encounter with the Creator – the Sustainer of all that is – your Abba Father.
