Lessons Learned From Weakness


“…I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do everything through him who gives me strength. Yet it was good of you to share in my troubles” Philippians 4:11-14.
A few weeks ago, I wrote to you about the things I have been learning through my physical situation. As I mentioned then, except for a few minor afflictions, I have been free of physical issues in my life – until this year. An issue arose that necessitated two surgeries, the second one just this week. Although treatment awaits me through the fall, perhaps the worst is over. Through this time, I have tried to take a friend’s advice and learn what I can through this experience. As with any self-respecting pastor, I have alliterated the latest four lessons with four pertinent p’s!
Peace. Knowing I would be having a second surgery could fill me with dread as time grew closer. It’s hard not to think about what will take place – and bad things that could happen. A good lesson in focus –on what – or Who will I place my thoughts. How affirming to set my mind on spiritual truths – God cares for me – He has my best in mind – whatever that may look like – He is with me and knows what I am going through. In placing myself in His hands, I have known essential peace.
Prayer. So many of you have assured me of your prayers as I walk this journey. One of you said, “you’re at the top of my list.” The sense of being cared for and undergirded with prayer by so many has been profound and humbling. So many people asking for mercy and grace on my behalf. The family of God is a powerful thing!
Patience. Arriving at 9am for an 11am surgery, I was told they were an hour behind…then two hours as two emergency surgeries bumped me through the day. I played games and texted on my phone, used the bathroom, looked out the window, read a cheap book I bought at the kiosk, slept, stood up, sat down, looked out the hallway, thought, slurped water from the tap and watched the second hand move on the clock. At five o clock I got the nod. Leon – you need to learn patience –to be a patient patient!
Presence. Through this time many of you have talked with me about your own situations. I realize that in our congregation on any given Sunday morning there are people who are struggling with many afflictions – and yet, there you are in church to worship and pray! I realize increasingly what brave people we have in this church who take their faith seriously. I have a deeper respect for the price you pay to be here.
I’m sure there will be more lessons to come. Let me encourage you to learn as well, whatever your current situation. God wants to encounter us throughout our journey – let’s have an open heart to hear what He has to say!
