This Sunday is Mother’s Day, so I take a moment to think about my own mother, Edna Throness – here with my dad and me when I was a little kid. She died too young – 15 years ago already, but she was a powerful woman of faith. Knowing she was dying, she asked me to speak on Hebrews 11 – the Faith chapter – at her funeral. I share with you the outline of what I said that day, focusing on the women in that chapter.

-Pharoah’s daughter vs 24 – not a woman of faith in Jehovah but respected the God of the Israelite boy Moses who she raised. My mom was a student of the bible – extensive underlining and pictures drawn in the margins are from a woman who spent much time with God.

-Rahab the harlot vs 31 – she exhibited faith but had to act on that faith. This was my mother, as she taught, played piano, hosted people, visited, mentored, led women’s groups – you get it. A person of faith ACTS on their faith.

-Sarah who laughed vs 11. My mother knew to not take herself – or others – too seriously. She knew how to laugh! We could all use a dose of this more often!

-Women in the miraculous vs 35. As time goes by, we see the miraculous among the people of God in the local church – not on TV or special meetings but in context of people we know. Over time to see God work in unusual ways among ‘usual’ people.

-Jochebed the mother of Moses vs 23. This woman defied the most powerful man on earth to save the life of her son. She refused to lose him to the current cultural setting, so she risked her life. Mom held on to us, her children, through mentoring and prayer – we owe her a debt.

How we need to be people of faith – male or female! To be faithful to what we know and be eager for special encounters with the Lord.

If you are a mother, continue to model to and pray for your family. If your mother is living, tell her of your love this weekend, and if she is a woman of faith, take time to thank her for that.

Happy Mother’s Day!
