BLOG: The Lord is Sovereign!

The Lord is sovereign and trustworthy in every situation.

The Lord is sovereign – He has it all in control. He dwells in the eternal ‘now. ’He is father and asks us to trust him. He is the great Shepherd and asks us to follow him through life. So, I’m trying to do that afresh these days.

Try as I might, there is so little I can control beyond trying to be a responsible husband, dad, citizen, and pastor. I don’t know the future – not even a day ahead. I have such a small perspective on the world – even on the world happening close around me! So, it’s quite a stretch to embrace the thought that the Lord is sovereign – He has it all in control. He dwells in the eternal ‘now.’ He is father and asks us to trust him. He is the great Shepherd and asks us to follow him through life. So, I’m trying to do that afresh these days.

As I read through the bible, I’m currently parked in the wisdom of Proverbs. I’ve been reminded about a couple of areas that God is sovereign over – like leaders.

“The mind of a king is like a watercourse in the hand of the Lord; He turns it whither he will” Proverbs 21:1. Imagine that! As I pray that bad leaders will be removed and good leaders put in place, I also realize that God is not nervous or cowed even by leaders who ignore or even hate him. He is sovereign over leaders – both small and great! But he is also sovereign over circumstance. Really?

“The lot is cast into the lap; but the decision rests wholly with the Lord” Proverbs16:33. I hesitate to build a doctrine on this one but suffice to say that God is over even what we would call ‘luck.’ There are no surprises with him!

In the past two weeks, there have been two instances in my life where God clearly led and spoke – out of the blue. Maybe I’ll tell you about them sometime. But what a thought to be sitting there and thinking – the Lord knows exactly what’s going on here. How affirming! What a faith builder! God knows exactly what is going on with you --- and He is sovereign over the situation. Will you trust him afresh?

Don’t forget the Encounter chapel on the evening of September 11. We will worship together and spend good time in prayer. Pastor Dave Hearn will be speaking in the morning service, and we think a chapel that evening will be a great follow up to what he challenges us with!
